FAQ’s:
1) Natural Stone Veneer vs. Manufactured Stone Veneer
Natural stone veneer is actual stone from the earth cut thin to allow installation as a veneer. Manufactured stone veneer is cast from molds. Manufactured stone is lighter, easier to install, and in turn more cost effective. Natural stone is a great for applications around water. At the end of the day, it comes down to personal preference.
2) Dry-stack vs. Grout Joint
Dry-stack is when the stones are fit together tightly with the appearance of no mortar holding them together. Different grout joints will give the same stone distinctive looks. A raked joint is a recessed grout joint. A standard joint is when the mortar finishes to the edge of the stone. An over-grout joint is when the mortar runs heavy over the edge of the stone.
3) Where can I install stone veneer?
Stone veneer can be applied to any structurally sound surface with the proper preparation.
4) Is the manufactured stone combustible?
No. It can be installed as a facade to fireplaces, fire pits, and behind stoves. It is recommended you keep the stone at least 18” away from any direct flame.
5) Can I install stone veneer near water?
If the stone is going to be exposed to constant or consistent water such as showers, water features, or pools, it is recommended that a natural stone is used. Typical applications that may get occasional rain water would be suited just fine for a manufactured stone.
6) Does the stone add any insulation value to my home?
Yes. Manufactured stone has an R-value of .473 at 1.387 inches thick. Most manufactured stones range from 1” to 3” thick. Natural stone is even more dense and heavy than manufactured stone providing an even greater R-value
